Buyers & Cellars Wine Consultants

In 1982, while apprenticing as a chef, the young Stephen Reiss had an epiphany. At the end of the night any left over wine was brought back into the kitchen, and the staff all had a sip, trying to guess what it might be. On that fateful night, Stephen guessed correctly, and it changed his life. It turned out that the ability to remember flavors so completely was a rare talent and certainly one that was ideal for the pursuit of wine knowledge.

For two years he read everything he could about wine, and visited dozens of wineries around the world, expanding his knowledge. In 1984 at the bequest of one of his favorite restaurants, he began consulting and Buyers & Cellars was born (on Leap Year Day, the day after his birthday).

Thirty years and dozens of wine tasting competitions, exams and accolades later, Dr. Stephen Reiss, PhD, Certified Wine Educator, is still at it.

Author of several books on wine (see above) and the highly regarded WineEucation.com website. Dr. Reiss spent ten years teaching wine appreciation at all levels at his Aspen Wine School. In 2009, after an epic world wide journey, Argentina beckoned. Working with various wineries in blending their wines, and improving their restaurants and hospitality programs, Dr. Reiss produced several books on the region, before setting his sights on Asia.

Having counted clients that included insurance companies, the IRS, wineries, and who’s who of the corporate world, Dr. Reiss is still available for the rare project that may intrigue him.
